Whisky delays on the cards thanks to shortage of boxes | Scotland

Whisky distilleries are facing shortages of cardboard and glass as well as seeing the impact of a shortage of delivery drivers blamed on Brexit.

The shortages are causing delays to orders for customers and have hampered plans to expand overseas. Manufacturers are also facing increased costs per delivery, it was claimed.

A spokesman for the GlenAllachie Distillery in Speyside said: “The growth of online shopping has resulted in cardboard being in much higher demand.” The current lead time for cardboard was about six months, double the normal rate.

John Laurie, managing director of the Glenturret distillery in Crieff, Perthshire, had also seen delays caused by the cardboard shortage. He added: “Brexit has also caused complexities with receiving goods into the UK.
