‘I love that it’s not a franchise’: Waterloo bubble tea shop bringing happiness and good vibes to community

There’s a little corner tucked within the vast University Shops Plaza in Waterloo that has been serving happiness, good vibes, and some dance moves to pandemic-weary students and residents of the community.

“This is the only branch and I love that it’s not a franchise,” said Jinny Song who opened Sweet Dreams Teashop during her co-op stay at the University of Waterloo. “During that time, Waterloo was lacking in social spots …(and) bubble tea was starting to get popular in Toronto,” she shared.

“I really thought it was the right timing, the right product and service, and the right fit for me.”

Today, people line up outside and around the shop to get their hands on their quirky concoctions like their fun weekly specials as well as the usual drinks served with soft and chewy tapioca, bobba, or lychee jelly.

Aside from their popular drinks, they also serve food items like premium paninis and their colourful version of a Filipino pastry called ensaymada.

But what makes the place special for the community is its inviting atmosphere and cosy vibe that has attracted an army of loyal customers through the years, many of whom are former university students who remember spending hours with friends at the shop. “For many, it’s a home away from home, and for others, it’s a place to escape,” Jinny shared.

When they’re not serving milk tea and ensaymada, the staff are busy showing their TikTok moves for followers and friends on social media.

More than just selling tea, what makes this spot special is how they have become part of the community says the owner. “I love how the KW community has embraced our little shop and I’m extremely grateful for the support.”
