Used wine barrels from regional producers looking for a new home

The last story I wrote about wine barrels for sale generated a lot of interest, at least in the number of people who read the story. It’s a reminder of some of the niche interest in the industry that goes beyond the bottled product.

So two recent mentions in winery newsletters about barrels for sale seemed to make it a good time to revisit the topics.

Barrels generally last three to four seasons, but that can vary widely depending on the quality of the barrel, how it’s used and how long a winery wants to keep using it.

Allegro Winery in southern York County sent out a note last weekend noting that it has some “retired” barrels for sale. They are $200 each, available on a “first-come, first-served” basis until they’re gone. No holds. You can purchase any at the winery in Brogue during tasting room hours: Monday thru Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. If you are fully vaccinated, you do not need to wear a mask to come inside.

Setter Ridge Vineyards in Berks County also noted in its email to customers within the past couple of weeks that it has several barrels for sale. Those are $125/barrel. In addition, the winery said that it has cases of unused wine bottles available at $12/case. The winery, located near Kutztown, is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

There was a time when wine industry classifieds were available through Penn State, but that service has been discontinued. Pennsylvania Wine Association (PWA) president Larry Shrawder said his organization will soon be listing classifieds, which will include barrel sales.

For any other wineries that read this and have barrels for sale, send me an email at pvigna@penniive.com and I will add yours listing to the story.
