Pa. Wine Society taking trip to Lancaster County producer for tour, tasting

The Pennsylvania Wine Society (PWS) is hitting the road again next weekend.

The second “Summer in the Vineyard” series event will take place at Waltz Vineyards Estate Winery in Manheim, Lancaster County, beginning at 3 p.m. July 31. The address for Waltz, one of the region’s top wineries, is 1599 Old Line Road.

Bring a light afternoon picnic to accompany the wines that will be offered for tasting. It will also include a tour of the winery.

Outside food and non-alcoholic beverages are permitted, but no outside alcohol will be allowed. Waltz wines will be available by the bottle after the tasting.

As of Sunday, Very limited seating was available, so make your reservation for this event as soon as possible. COVID-19 protocols will be followed and proof of vaccination is required before the reservation confirmation.

The cost is $40 for members, $35 for patrons and $50 for nonmembers.

Among the wines being tasted:

  • 2020 Sauvignon Blanc. Look for citrus notes with a herbaceous finish in this crisp and refreshing dry white wine.
  • 2020 Fusion. A semi-dry blend of Semillon, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc, it has tropical fruit notes with a hint of minerality and a crisp finish.
  • 2018 Reserve Chardonnay. Aged for nine months in French oak, this wine tastes of pears, apples, butter, and caramel.
  • 2020 Stiegel Rose. A dry rosé made from a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc; this interesting wine has tart strawberry notes with a citrus finish.
  • 2017 Cherry Tree Merlot. The Cherry Tree Merlot was aged for 24 months in French oak barrels resulting in a bold dry red with big tannins and notes of cherry, raspberry, and cocoa. This wine should age well for a decade or more.
  • 2016 Crow Woods Cabernet. Also aged for 24 months in French oak creating another bold, dry red with the Cabernet, you can expect notes of dark fruit with a lingering velvety finish.

In addition to monthly events, the PWS has started to take these afternoon/evening trips to a few of the region’s quality wineries. It has another trip scheduled in mid-September to Nissley Vineyards in Bainbridge, Lancaster County.
