Braintree Square’s Pizza Maria plans to serve cocktails, beer, wine

BRAINTREE – A Braintree Square restaurant  has received town officials’ approval to serve cocktails with its pizza.

The license board Tuesday approved an all-alcoholic beverage license for Pizza Maria Bar and Grill at 2 Elm St.

The business took over the former Crown Pizza location in February.

Crown Pizza drew noise complaints from neighbors for being open until 4 a.m., mostly due to early-morning delivery drivers in the parking lot. Crown Pizza was brought before the board in 2020 for disciplinary action, and was  warned by Town Clerk James Casey, the chairman of the license board, to work with the neighbors.

Casey said Pizza Maria’s owners “were informed of the prior problems.”

Pizza Maria owner Illr Terolli told the board the business will close by 1 a.m., and will stay open that late only Thursday through Saturday nights. The closing time will be 11 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and 10 p.m. Sunday.  The restaurant will open at 11 a.m. every day except Sunday, when it will open at noon.

There was no opposition to the license, and representatives of the neighboring First Congregational Church and a local business spoke in support.

The license is subject to final approval by the state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission. It is  limited to Braintree Square, South Braintree Square and Weymouth Landing under a special state law.  Capacity is limited to 75 seats. Pizza Maria has 49 seats.

In other business, the license board granted a one-day beer and wine license and an entertainment license to Matthew Lynch and Reyes Boxing Inc. for July 16 charity boxing shows at Daugherty Gymnasium, 538 Washington St. The event will be divided into two cards, with exhibition bouts from 1 to 5 p.m. and up to 11 professional fights starting at 6 p.m. Promoters expect to draw as many as 1,000 fight fans.

Police Chief Mark Dubois said he would work with the promoters on a parking plan for the event due to the lack of off-street parking at the gym.

Also approved was a one-day beer and wine license for a 20th-anniversary celebration of the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office’s Leadership Academy program on July 21 at 2015 Washington St.
